So freakin’ delicious! Everything else was pretty good. Not pictured are some pork and ginger pot stickers we got. Included are: garlic veggies, shrimp dumplings, shu mai, another kind of dumpling?, and some runny custard buns (a sweet dessert). Attached is a picture of everything we ate. Food/Pricing: Yum! Dim sum for breakfast is perfect. It’s hard if you know what you want but don’t know what it’s called, but if you describe something to a waitress pushing the cart, they’ll pull out dishes that might be close to what you’re looking for, if not what you’re looking for. The waiters were nice and we got pretty much everything we wanted. I love cart dim sum because waiters just go around pushing the cart and offering you various dishes. Restaurant was getting real busy after that too. Service: We went for breakfast ( 10: 30 am) and were seated immediately. Not sure though :) It’s pretty loud in there with the hustle and bustle, but not overbearingly so. It definitely looks «fancy» for Asian restaurant standards it looked like a place the holds more traditional Asian wedding receptions. Location/Atmosphere: can’t say much about the location as I’m not from around the area, but the place was nice and clean. 5÷ 5, but alas, you cannot give half stars. Hi from Washington State! The Bae and I visited Ocean City during a weekend trip I took to Portland recently. Also I want to try more of the offerings that i was too full to taste on this visit. I will for sure be returning to Ocean City the next time i have a Dim Sum craving. The only downside to this place is when you want them to add up your bill - it was like pulling teeth to flag someone down for us to pay. All were delicious and hot! 4 people ate until we were very full and the bill was only $ 28! Such a deal. Some of the things we ordered were the BBQ Pork buns, rice in the leaves (which come with meat in them too), meatballs, ginger chicken dumplings, beef dumplings, rice noodles… Just to name a few. It was typical Dim Sum options and service - ladies push carts around, you asked what they have, they show you, if it looks good you say yes, or wait for another cart with different options. We got a table, but not soon after we were seated was the entire place packed. I arrived with a party of 4 on a Tuesday, and it was crowded already! They have a decently sized parking lot which was a welcomed sight. I had been craving Dim Sum for weeks, and finally quelled my craving. I was so pleased with my visit to Ocean City. It’s a good item to bring to pot lucks because they can sit out for hours and most people like them although they do have pork in them. It was pretty good, ample tasty filling with light pastry. Overall the dim sum was average, not great, but not terrible either with the exception of the baked char siu bao which I would return to purchase. Unfortunately mediocre service is the norm at dim sum restaurants. Service was surprisingly good and they didn’t screw up my take out order. Thick doughy skins, filling not really flavorful, reminds me of the take out dim sum at the 99 Ranch Markets. So of the 4 items I would rate: har gow 3/ 5, sui mai 3/ 5, bean curd roll 3/ 5, pot sticker 3/ 5, baked char siu bao 4⁄ 5. I am part Chinese so the dine in cart experience is no big deal and something I only do if I am with a group. I am going to take out at all of the restaurants because that’s what we usually do. I decided to get the same 5 items at each of the restaurants on the tour for a fair comparison. I was picking up some stuff at Fubonn to make bahn mi and decided to get some take out dim sum. OCSR is an OK venue 1 block from the Fubonn asian market. I’ve eaten a ton of dim sum because it is one of the main things Chinese families do as far as socialization, eat eat eat then eat some more. 3 rd Place 2016 PDX Take Out Dim Sum Throwdown So this is my first stop on my PDX dim sum tour.

Unfortunately, they aren’t always reliable (a waste of your time) or legally licensed (musicians gotta eat, too!). If you know what the song sounds like, you can use a tab to learn a riff in minutes and skip the sheet music! Think of the iconic intro from “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones, the contagious riff from “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People, the badassery of the bassline in “Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa.Ī final note: tabs are really popular and easy to produce, and you’ll probably see tons of free options online. Tabs are incredibly useful, whether you’re a beginner or a more advanced player. Learning a riff with sheet music requires you to be able to read music - but tabs don’t. If all of that sounds foreign to you, don’t worry. If you know how to read music, all that detail is great. It will include the notes on bass and/or treble clefs that indicate both pitch and precise rhythm. It will tell you the time signature, key signature, tempo, and dynamics. Traditional sheet music is much more detailed than tablature. The examples above are in standard tuning. Tabs should also tell you what kind of tuning is being used. The notes themselves will sometimes be spaced apart from one another in a way that helps you understand if they should be played closer together or farther apart. That said, some tabs will give you additional info to help you with timing, such as the tempo (communicated in beats-per-minute) and time signature (is it a 3/4 waltz or a 4/4 rock beat, for instance). Here are some more commonly-used symbols:Īs a rule, tabs don’t provide a ton of direction on rhythm it’s important that you’ve heard the song before and can use a combination of the tabs and your ear to get it down. The “h” means that you should do a hammer-on from the 3rd to the 5th fret to get that folky sound. For instance, in the beginning of the iconic “Man of Constant Sorrow” from O Brother, Where Art Thou?, you’ll see “3h5” on the 5th string. When it comes to incorporating techniques into tabs, there are some commonly-used symbols to keep in mind. These stacked numbers show you which notes you have to play all at once in order to form a chord - like the A7sus4 chord - that makes you feel feelings when you hear this song. If you’re learning “Wonderwall” (you know you want to), you’ll see multiple numbers stacked-one on each line. Playing chords using tabs: In addition to playing single notes and riffs, tablature can also be used to show you how to play a chord. If you’re playing a melody, like the riff of “ Ring of Fire” shown above, you’ll see one number at a time, left to right. As you read and play the tabs from left to right, you begin to string together the song (pun intended). The second note is the 1st fret on the 5th string. In the example above, the first note is the 0 fret on the 5th string (a 0 means that you play the open string). Playing single notes and riffs in tablature: Each number on a line represents which fret you should play on that specific string. In standard tuning, the lines of tabs represent these notes: In standard tuning, they represent the high E and low E notes, respectively: The top line is the 1st string and the bottom line is the 6th string. The lines in a tab represent the strings on a guitar. For this post, we’ll show you two guitar tabs as examples, but keep in mind that the same principles apply to reading bass tabs (you just have fewer strings to worry about!). There are a few basic components to tabs, which we’ll cover here. If you’re familiar with guitar chord charts, they are really similar. Tabs make it quick and easy to learn songs by telling you which strings to pluck and which frets to place your fingers on. Tabs, short for tablature, are shorthand charts that document music for stringed, fretted instruments like guitar and bass. There is a process that is cultivated by those around you who see you and love you and help lead you to a space from where to play such devotional music. It is difficult to pinpoint when an album might begin to be made. That common, shared space of muted, cosmic musical moments – like in the happenstance improvisation of these prayers (hymn-provisation) – where humans can grieve, heal, feel safe, find calm and create comfort. And the music becomes part of The Commons. With that, perseverance becomes pleasure. And in that moment of acceptance, you are surrendering to the only law that exists, the law of nature: change. Instead of treading water and holding your spot in the current, only letting go, giving up to the current, do you float. Or rather, control will not lead you there – to God. And by listening to that magnetic pull northwards, one finds God. More than improvisations, though, these pieces are like prayers or hymns: music that is for devotion to your true north. Two songs from the mountains, two songs from Brian’s broken piano in Wisconsin, and the rest improvised at NorthStar. As such, this album is a document of an event. Keys to old doors that led to old friends like Booker, Bruce, Randy, and Keith – all who came by to say, “Hi, we’ve missed you.” Cousin Brian Joseph muted and unmuted mics that he had set up around NorthStar, capturing the space, presence and conversation between these actors. They spoke about the past and the future, passing down stories through a surrendered Phil as he passed his fingers across the keys. That nave and that Steinway spoke together over those spring time afternoons. The sounds of the street bled through those brick walls. These ten pieces came to life on a long-cared-for and much-loved 100 year-old Steinway over three days at the church. Yet it was during hour-long stretches of improvisation in NorthStar Church of the Arts in Durham where the music could open up to the presence of divine intoxication. Circling this heartspace, Phil experimented with sanctuary in order to honor the ritual: he retreated alone to the mountains in North Carolina to write, sojourned to family abodes in Wisconsin to nurture. The liminal zone where life’s structures break apart and begin to reform: no longer, not yet. A ritual is like a boat that helps you make the passage between POINT A: everything that has come before, and POINT B: everything that will come after. And if you listen, those rituals bring transformation.įor change to happen, there must be a passage, a journey. Snakes, long the guardians of sacred spaces and stories, have always been getting themselves tangled up in some of our oldest rituals. Whatever that snake wanted, it got itself involved in the making of a record. As it slithered its way across the floor, Phil sat at a piano in the middle of the nave, recording an improvisation later titled “Queen Of Branches.” Before old wiggly could show his forked-tongue to Phil and cause a polka, the serpent was scooted out the backdoor without interrupting the day’s proceedings. As the songbird whistled from the willow, a snake wandered into the church. Rating: ESRB: No idea, but it was fairly harmless and I’d guess something like E for Everyone Such is life, when you are not a space gnome. Too many amazing titles to try, not enough time. I also need to get around to Oxenfree and Firewatch at some point as well. It’s the journey that matters, and the locations so far are absolutely stunning in their strangeness, their ability to be unnatural and yet familiar, a place one could live in if that was their role in life.īetween this and Night in the Woods, 2016 is shaping up to be stellar for adventure games. I’m sure something will drive the space gnome forward, but it’s not essential for me to care about. I wonder what the plot to Samorost 3 will be truthfully, it doesn’t matter, because this is the sort of point-and-click adventure game where what’s on the screen and getting to the next one to see more wild imagination come to life is the reward. I just skimmed my review of Samorost 2 to remind me what happened next, and it involved a dog getting kidnapped by aliens. Thankfully, the day was saved, as well as the space gnome’s home. At times, it can be jarring, like the screenshot above, but for the most part it becomes the norm, and you begin to believe in this strange planet and wonder how these critters and beings survive and whether or not they also know they are on a bad path to their own demise. Sometimes it is difficult to take everything in when you are presented with this gorgeous, stunning mix of reality and artwork. Paying attention to everything happening on screen is vital to making progress, even if it is as minor as bugs making noises or the way a signpost is facing. You do it by clicking, deducing.Īlmost instantly, you’ll find yourself in a strange, surreal world with Samorost, where common combines with odd, solving somewhat leisurely puzzles that occasionally require a bit of extra thinking and clicking. And so you’ll travel to this asteroid, which is full of life and machinery and isn’t just some hunk of rock hurling its way towards death and destruction, and try to change its path. The story for the premiere entry in the series is that an asteroid is on a direct course to crash into the gnome’s home planet, and he will do whatever it takes to not let that happen. It’s fairly short, depending on how good of a clicker and puzzle solver you are, and it’s more about interacting with the environment than controlling the space gnome directly. That’s why I headed over to the developer’s website, where you can play the first Samorost for free in your browser. Suffice to say, I like Amanita Design’s games, as weird as they are, and I want to eventually play them all. I played Samorost 2 way back in the day (circa 2010, when I was moving out of my studio apartment), and only just realized with the latest news that I never touched the first in the series, though I did bang my head against a wall for hours in Machinarium, less in Botanicula. I mean, to be honest, I haven’t really thought about the Samorost series in a good long while. Relaxing and peaceful game with intuitive gameplay accesible even for non-experienced players of all ages. The surprising news the other day was that Samorost 3 is on its way, launching on PC and Mac on March 24, 2016.Beautiful ambient music by Tomas “Floex” Dvorak.Adventure full of surprising creatures and locations.Although it is really a con we would still totally recommend the game. We really wish you could take screenshots in this game and we would really like it if they added that (don’t expect them to because of the platform its running on and the fact that it’s an older game). The only gripe we have about the art is the lack of screenshots. Everything has a nice mix of the look of a picture, an abstract world and random items in the everyday world. The art is very consistent and really flows from one place to another. It is a little more hand-drawn looking than 3 whether this is a pro or a con is up to you but we enjoy it and it has a nice feel all around. Art Like the other Samorost games Samorost 2 has some amazing art. Actual outside dimensions are: 24.5" x 24.5" x 2-3/4" high. Thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT 888-MONEY-PIT.4-Sided Ceiling Air Diverter with Magnet Install TOM: So consider that you may be able to come out of the dryer in a different direction. And so I just looked up online and the installation instructions showed me how to rerun the duct coming out the side of the machine so that I could vent it quicker to an exterior wall than having to go down through a floor. But I noticed that the side of the dryer has had punch-outs – holes – for it. For example, I have a dryer that I’m reconfiguring right now that has a dryer exhaust duct out the back. It’s not going to be as efficient, so that’s your trade-off.Īnd by the way, keep in mind that with most dryers, you can actually move the dryer vent. And then that warm, moist air has to travel all that distance to get out. So if you take – if you come off the machine and you take one elbow down and then you go into the floor, you take another elbow out, you’re essentially making a U-turn. I would think about how many turns you need to make, starting at the machine, to get that to happen. TOM: Well, here’s what I would think about. Maybe it would probably take about 8 feet or so before I got away from the deck. The only other option I’d have is to run it along, basically, the floor of the deck. But I have a basement window there and it would just make a mess of the window. MIKE: Well, I thought about putting it just below the deck, which is about 12 inches down. TOM: Well, if you did rerun it, where would you go? And certainly, it’s capturing a lot, too. MIKE: Well, that’s what I expected, too, and it’s a new dryer. I mean the fact that it’s venting out is what it’s supposed to do.ĭoes the dryer lint vent work well inside the machine? Because it would seem to me that if the lint trap is working well inside the machine, you shouldn’t be getting as much lint in the dryer exhaust duct. I don’t think that anything that traps lint is going to be a good thing. Plus, you have the added hassle of needing to maintain the dryer exhaust duct because it will continually build up with lint and have to be cleaned. Because if you try to reroute this dryer anywhere else but directly out, it’s going to take a lot longer for those clothes to dry. Well, look, the good news is that having a dryer vent that’s so close to an exterior wall like that means that your clothes dry as efficiently as possible. MIKE: I’ll offer that one up to my wife, too, and see how that goes. TOM: One solution could be just a clothesline, you know? Did you ever think of that?
